When it comes to being emotional no one does it better in the series than Kira Yamato. In Gundam SEED, Kira Yamato is constantly faced with challenges that a teenage boy should not have to face, challenges such as piloting a mobile suit, enlisting in the military, having to fight and or kill your best friend.
Kira can be seen shaking and crying either in the cockpit of the Strike or in his quarters during or after a battle in the early episodes of Gundam SEED. The only one who understood him was Flay Allstar.
With Flay Allstar beside Kira, he becomes a better and better mobile suit pilot as he now has someone who can understand his feelings and keep his mental health stable. Later on Flay Allstar dies while near a battle and as she dies, Kira Yamato falls into a great shock that leaves him completely unable to continue fighting , forcing Athrun Zala to save him and then have them retreat.
In those early episodes, Athrun Zala tries numerous times to reason with Kira Yamato. Kira only answers that he is not part of the Earth Forces but just fighting to protect his friends of the Archangel. My friends are on that ship! They completely abandon their idea of living in neutral. This forces Kira to enlist to continue to protect his friends instead of trying to find a way to persuade them to find another way to disembark the Archangel.
At the battle of Crete, even though Athrun Zala already told Kira Yamato to stay off the battle field because his presence only brings confusion , Kira still continues to intervene between the battles of ZAFT and the Earth Alliance. He even goes to Orb to abduct Cagalli Yula Attha in order to stop her from Marying Yuna Roma Saran and he bases all of his reasoning on what feels right. We know what you are saying, but we can learn to understand and we can change!
We understand living in a world where you have no idea that you have no freedom is failure of a world, but in that world everyone is happy, so if you really think about it, chairman Gilbert Durandal did nothing wrong. He just wanted to stop the cycle of war by going on a path that would end all wars. He also manages to stand his ground against the renowned Le Creuset team, composed of 4 red uniform mobile suit pilots.
His plot armor is so great that the only time Kira loses to a battle is when he fights Shinn Asuka during operation Angel Down. Even though Kira Yamato is the ultimate Coordinator, it cannot compensate for the fact that Kira has not received any military training. The Alliance are trying to catch up with the Coordinator's superior technology, they secretly developed its own Mobile Suit Gundam.
But through a twisted fate, a young Coordinator, Kira Yamato, becomes the pilot of the Alliance's prototype and is forced to fight his own people in order to protect his friends: Mirialla Haw, Tolle Koening, Sai Argyle, etc Kira Yamato is the first generation coordinator with natural parents. After he graduated from preparatory school on the moon, he enrolled in an industrial college on Heliopolis colony of the neutral nation of Aube to avoid the war.
Kira is a little shy but he is a really kind-hearted young man. Kira has a robotic friend named Birdee given to him by his best friend, Athrun Zala. Kira also pilots Strike Gundam. Kira is a bit spineless for a hero but after digging further, it seems like Kira maybe the strongest protagonist Kira is really popular with the ladies. Also to note, throughout the series, when Kira is in battle where he is cornered or angry, there are scenes of a "seed exploding" where Kira's eyes become a sort of hollow purple.
It's in this stage when Kira becomes one of the fiercest Gundam Pilots. This is what Creuset meant by Kira being the ultimate coordinator, because he is supposedly the only coordinator with that ability. This is a questionable theory though, as throughout the Gundam Seed series, there are scenes where the "exploding seed" not only showed up for Kira, but for Cagalli and Athrun as well. Also, though no one has actually seen the seed for Lacus , when she is commanding in the final battle in the Seed series, many can see her eyes have the same "hollow" look of a berserker.
Each seed for an individual is different, Kira's is purple, Athrun 's is green, and Cagalli 's is brownish. Another thing to notice is that the power of the "seed" helps increase the coordinators natural abilities, rather than make them crazy to fight.
For example, when Kira is in seed mode, he has to ability to analyze and maneuver the computer data of his Gundam. Shinn Asuka in Gundam Seed Destiny , also possesses the power of "seed" but is the only "new" recruit to have this ability, and is in similar form to Kira's. Kira is really in a tight spot, just like Amuro Ray in the original Gundam series. He's a Coordinator who finds himself caught in the middle of the conflict where he must fight his best friend Athrun to protect the ones he loves on the side of Naturals.
Obviously, he wants to end the conflict as soon as possible. Kira later briefly speaks with Andrew over the death of Aisha and asks the former ZAFT commander if he holds any form of resentment.
Waltfeld replies that holding onto one would be easy, but it would not change anything by the end of the day. Lacus, however, breaks down and cries in Kira's arms, finally able to grieve for her father's death due to Patrick's zeal in wiping out the moderates within the PLANT Supreme Council.
Soon after, both ZAFT and Alliance forces coincidentally discover the Eternal and the Archangel respectively in Mendel Colony and attempt to take care of the battleships. Kira and Athrun are initially sent out to battle the Alliance forces, now headed by former Archangel crew member, Natarle Badgiruel. Once the Alliance forces withdraw, Kira joins Mu, and the pair would chase Rau deep inside Mendel Colony and into the laboratories within. It is there that Rau revealed the truth of Kira's parentage and who he truly - a perfect Coordinator, the Ultimate Coordinator.
In turn, he also reveals his identity as a clone of Mu's father, Al Da Flaga and his goal of ensuring that humanity, both Naturals and Coordinators, end up extinct. Kira swore to stop him, incidentally knocking off Rau's mask. Using their shock as cover, Rau escapes and launches the captured Flay inside a lifepod.
Reentering the battle, he hears Flay's voice, calling out for someone to save her, that she had the key to ending the war. Kira moves to rescue her, but by doing so, he's disabled by the Forbidden and Raider Gundams. After Athrun drags Kira back, Kira ends up coming to inside his bed with Lacus watching. Kira cries on Lacus's lap, stopping Cagalli from asking about the picture and their parents.
Lacus would help Kira to come to terms with his true origins and admit her love for him. Kira embraces Lacus, accepting her confession. After the battle, the Junk Guild is called in to repair and resupply the trio of battleships. There, Kira finally meets Lowe face to face. Just before the final battle, Lacus gives Kira her ring that once belonged to her mother and asks him to come back to her after the fighting had ended. Kira accepts the ring, thanks for her support and kisses Lacus on the cheek before leaving for battle.
Kira and Athrun are only barely able to escape its line of fire thanks to Yzak 's warning. Midway through the trip, Kira has a bad sensation and immediately returns back to the Archangel. It is here that Rau's plan comes to be known: as the flawed clone of Al Da Flaga, Rau seeks to punish humanity - both Natural and Coordinator alike - for their actions. During the fight, a lifepod from the ravaged Dominion battleship nears the battle, holding Flay.
Kira attempts to rescue Flay again, intercepting a beam rifle shot. Kira is overcome with grief, knowing that he failed to fulfill his promise of protecting his friends once again. With a brand new resolve, Kira returns to fight Rau one last time. Though the Freedom is damaged, Kira cripples the Providence with an attack that penetrates the cockpit. Even though the beam missed, Rau was killed by a beam of nuclear energy from GENESIS caused by Jachin Due's self-destruction, which vaporized the Providence before the superweapon itself is destroyed by the self-destruction of the Justice.
As hostilities come to an end, Kira is seen drifting out of the Freedom's cockpit, wondering what humanity's path shall be. As Athrun goes to fetch him, Kira says, "It's our world. They later receive a surprise visit from Athrun and Cagalli. While Kira wonders why he can still eat and sleep despite all the atrocities committed in the war, Athrun simply replies that it was because they were still human. Kira has been living on a secluded island one of the Marshall Islands in Orb territory since the end of the war.
He and Lacus have spent the last two years after the war assisting Reverend Malchio and Kira's adoptive mother with his orphanage. The mansion is destroyed by an unknown force of Coordinators trying to assassinate Lacus. The attempt on Lacus's life forces Kira to once again pilot the Freedom and participate in combat in order to protect his loved one, despite her reluctance in his taking up arms again.
He still abides by his policy to limit casualties, by disabling the opposing mobile suits in SEED mode, though the pilots then self-destruct their machines briefly shocking him. Orb joins the Earth Alliance, forcing Kira and Lacus return to the Archangel and take up secretive residence in the Kingdom of Scandinavia. He also helps Cagalli realize her mistake in letting Orb side with the Earth Alliance and helps her come to terms with her errors in judgement, despite her good intentions.
While docked, the Archangel' s crew discuss Chairman Durandal's underhanded tactics, with the introduction of a fake Lacus. Kira also noted how Durandal has repeatedly made opportunistic moves to sway the public to his side, and fears what the Chairman's true plans are. When the Orb forces are finally deployed by the Alliance against the Minerva at Dardanelles, Kira and the Archangel make a surprise appearance in the battle.
In response, Yuna calls Cagalli an imposter and orders Orb's forces to attack her. With little choice, Kira decides disarms several mobile suits on both sides of the skirmish to force the battle to halt. After a period of being part of the Archangel crew, Lacus decides to go into space to investigate what is going on, although Kira initially objects as he would not be able to watch over her, she assures him she will be careful and holds him to reassure him.
Lacus, Andrew, and the shuttle they have stolen are nearly shot down, but Kira protects them and sees them off. Athrun says they will not end the war by their methods and Cagalli must return to Orb if she wants Orb to leave the Earth Alliance. Kira intervenes again in the Alliance-Orb battle with the Minerva in Crete, where he saves the Minerva from a possible finishing blow. Finally, Kira admits that he understands Athrun's desire to protect his friends aboard the Minerva , but is unable to see why he would be indifferent to Cagalli's plight.
Declaring that Athrun must be defeated, Kira proceeds to leave the Saviour irreparable. Shortly after Crete, the Archangel soon receives members from the fallen Orb carrier, Takemikazuchi , which had been sunk by the Impulse.
During which, the pilots and second-in-command, Amagi , began crying of how they were forced to attack Cagalli against their wishes as well as speaking of the growing unpopularity of the Seirans and their hopes for Cagalli to take the country back. Much to Kira's delight, their tearful reconciliation with Cagalli keeps her hope alive in eventually returning to Orb.
Kira hits Destroy's chest cannons with its beam sabers as it was about to fire on Shinn's Impulse Gundam, dealing it a finishing blow that inevitably results in the death of its pilot, Stella Loussier. After the battle, Neo's data is analyzed, and to the shock of the crew, matches Mu's. As Neo does not know who "Mu" is and does not associate himself Mu's former rank or show any knowledge of the Archangel's crew, Kira immediately believes that Mu's memories were tampered with.
To not give the ZAFT forces an excuse to intensify their attack, Ramius refuses to perform any aggressive action against their aggressors and prioritizes their flight to the sea, while Kira forbids the other pilots of the Archangel from going out to honor Cagalli's wish to bring them all back to Orb safely. Though the Freedom and Archangel were able to hold off their initial attackers, the tide soon shifts when the Minerva enters the fray. The Freedom is soon attacked by Shinn and his Force Impulse Gundam, who recently learned of Kira's habit of not attacking another unit's cockpit.
As a result, Kira could not land any beam shots on the Force Impulse. When Kira severed the Force Impulse's head and part of its left forearm using the beam saber, Shin responded by using his mobile suits ability to separate and replace its body components with replacements from the Minerva.
After ejecting the Force Impulse's damaged upper body, Shinn then detonates the parts within close range of the Freedom, causing it to fall out of the sky. Later, the separation ability causes Kira to miss his beam saber strike, exposing the Freedom's back and its left wing is destroyed by Force Impulse. Eventually, the Archangel was hit by a glancing shot from the Minerva' s positron cannon, distracting Kira from the battle.
The Freedom was then attacked by Shinn's Force Impulse that is holding one of the Sword Silhouette's anti-ship swords.
Despite Kira trying to block Shinn's charge with the Freedom's shield, the anti-ship sword managed to penetrate through the shield and Freedom's abdomen.
The Freedom's remains fell into the water, but Kira had deactivated the mobile suit's nuclear reactor before losing consciousness. Kira later explained to Athrun that his personal confusion at the attack and fatigue from the battle were contributing factors to his defeat. The pair are passed onto the Kira and the Archangel crew by Ledonir Kisaka , where Kira is the first person Athrun wakes up to, surprised that Kira was still alive. Kira later assures him that his companion was shielded from the brunt of their damage before urging Athrun to rest.
He and the rest of the Archangel also watch the battle of Heaven's Base intently. When LOGOS are defeated, Kira and Lacus fear that Orb will likely be Chairman Durandal's next target, knowing the country's deeply-rooted desires to protect their ideals against totalitarian control.
On the Eternal , Kira and Lacus are reunited. Kira thanks Lacus for giving him the ability to fight once more, and promises to return to her as soon as everything was over. He uses his new mobile suit to disable the attacking forces in only two minutes. While Cagalli withdraws to regain control of the military, Kira and Shinn battle.
As the fight drags on, Kira is overwhelmed by the pair, but, much to Kira's surprise, the injured Athrun arrives to provide support. When Athrun finds himself under attack from the Legend, Kira steps in and faces the Legend, leaving Athrun to deal with the Destiny. Kira catches the Infinite Justice in mid-air, preventing it from crashing. Back aboard the Archangel , Kira removes Athrun's helmet and flight suit, revealing that Athrun's wounds have re-opened and are bleeding profusely.
Kira then orders a stretcher to bring Athrun to the Archangel' s sick bay, where he recovers, tended to by Meyrin. Following the battle, he, Athrun and Lacus watch Cagalli's post-battle broadcast speaking against Chairman Durandal's decision to immediately declare war against them and invade.
Lacus soon assures Athrun that he has done his part and departs to Cagalli's office with Kira, where she would be able to out Durandal's imposter and reiterating Orb's refusal to partake in more of Durandal and Djibril's conflict.
